blue-pattern-t.jpg

Hi Valued Members/Customers,

Fall is upon us! The cooling temperatures and earlier setting sun lets us know that we will soon see the the changing of the seasons and approach of the holidays. There is a lot going on this month!

The Race Weekend is fast approaching and will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone from beginners to experienced competitors, plus kids can get involved as well! Make sure to get signed up soon to guarantee a t-shirt!! Grillin' in the Grove is still taking entries for competitive grillers, as well.

The Morris County Hospital will have a health fair at the armory this month, Saturday October 16th. It will be a very informative day and they will offer a lot of different screenings.

Also, this month is National Healthy Lung Month!! Read on for details about new opportunities in the Life Center to help you with your personal health and fitness goals!

National Healthy Lung Month
lungs and heart The respiratory, or pulmonary, system is responsible for providing two major functions: air distribution and gas exchange. Additionally, the respiratory system filters, warms, and moisturizes the air being breathed. Sound and speech are made possible, as is a sense of smell because of the lungs. The air that is absorbed into the lungs, then transports oxygen throughout the body, oxygenating the blood and then expels carbon dioxide by exhaling. The way the body functions is dependent on how the lungs operate. Cardiorespiratory exercise helps strengthen lung capacity, however it only takes a week of non-activity to feel the toll on cardio progress. Yoga and breathing exercises can also help with controlling heart rate, blood pressure, stress levels, and strengthen lung capacity. In the United States, cancer is the second leading killer (Heart disease is the first) of citizens, with lung cancer being the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than 175,000 lung cancer deaths per year are caused by tobacco use and therefore could be prevented completely (National Cancer Institute). Now is the perfect time to quit and there are a lot of programs to help. The benefits of smoking cessation start almost immediately. Within 2 years, much of the risk of heart disease disappears, and within 5-10 years, the risk is about the same as a non-smoker. Bronchitis and emphysema sufferers can expect an improvement in breathing almost at once. Nothing an individual can do, including diet and exercise, is as important as giving up smoking. Daily life becomes much easier and overall well-being is substantially healthier!

Fitness Assessment and Body Composition Measurements

skinfold measureFitness assessment will now be free for members interested in knowing what physical areas need to be impoved in. The Benefits of a fitness assessment include the following:

  • Establishing current fitness status and providing baseline information to better design an exercise plan.
  • Utilize this information for comparison later as progress and improvements occur.
  • Powerful educational and motivational tool, and increases the likelihood of program adherence.

Components of a Fitness Assessment:

  1. Assess resting Heart rate and blood pressure (if possible)
  2. Assess body composition (skinfolds, waist-to-hip, and girths)
  3. Assess cardiorespiratory fitness
  4. Assess muscular strength and/or endurance
  5. Assess flexibility
  6. Assess posture

If you do not want to do a full Fitness Assessment (usually takes an hour), the Body Composition Assessment only takes about 10 minutes and is a great reference for future comparison. If you are interested, make an appointment with Sandra to get started on your fitness and health journey.
